Biography

Emeritus Professor at the Université de Sherbrooke (Quebec). He has a PhD in History from the Sorbonne University in Paris and another in Theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. He was director of the Centre d’études de la Renaissance at the Université de Sherbrooke from 1969 to 1998. His research and publications have focused on the religious and intellectual history of the European Middle Ages and Renaissance, with particular attention to key figures of humanism and the Reformation in Spain, France and Italy. His main work has been the direction of the collection Index des livres interdits (11 vols.), which gathers and analyses all the inquisitorial indexes of prohibited books that were published in Europe during the sixteenth century.
